USA Swimming Mourns the Passing of Frank Busch

Frank Busch Memoriam

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – USA Swimming mourns the passing of Frank Busch, a longtime leader, coach, and contributor to the sport of swimming whose impact spanned generations of athletes and coaches.

Busch’s relationship with USA Swimming encompassed decades of service to the sport, including as a National Team coach, National Team Director, and, most recently, a member of the USA Swimming Board of Directors and National Team Steering Committee.

“Frank’s impact on USA Swimming and the sport as a whole is difficult to measure because it reaches far beyond the medals, teams, and championships associated with his name,” USA Swimming President and Chief Executive Officer Kevin Ring said. “He dedicated his life to helping athletes and coaches reach their potential and to making our sport stronger. We are deeply grateful for his leadership, perspective, and decades of service to USA Swimming. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, former athletes, and the countless people whose lives he touched.”

Busch served as USA Swimming’s National Team Director from 2011 until his retirement in 2017, providing leadership and direction to the organization’s National Team program during a period that included the 2012 Olympic Games in London and the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

“Along with so many people whose lives Frank impacted, I’m heartbroken by his passing. Frank was a wonderful man who cared deeply about his family, his friends, and the sport of swimming,” USA Swimming National Team Executive Director and Coach Greg Meehan said. “He was the type of person who left you feeling hopeful after every conversation. He was kind, thoughtful, and always willing to lend his support. His servant leadership set him apart, and his impact on USA Swimming is immeasurable. Frank will be deeply missed, and our thoughts are with Patty, his children and grandchildren, and everyone who loved him during this incredibly difficult time.”

His service to USA Swimming began well before his tenure as National Team Director. Busch was a member of multiple U.S. international coaching staffs, including the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, where he served as an assistant coach. He was also named USA Swimming Coach of the Year in 1998.

Following his retirement as National Team Director, Busch remained connected to USA Swimming and continued to lend his experience and perspective to the organization. In 2024, he joined the USA Swimming Board of Directors and also served as an ex officio member of the National Team Steering Committee.

Busch’s influence extended throughout the American swimming community through decades of coaching and mentorship. His work helped shape athletes, coaches, and leaders across the sport, and his legacy remains reflected in the people and programs he influenced throughout his career.

Beyond his extraordinary contributions to swimming, Busch was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother. He is survived by his wife of more than 50 years, Patty, five children, seven grandchildren, and a family who remained at the center of his life throughout his remarkable career.

USA Swimming extends its deepest condolences to Patty, the Busch family, and the generations of athletes, coaches, colleagues, and friends who knew and loved Frank.
