East Meadow, N.Y. – USA Swimming National Junior Team member Erica Sullivan (Las Vegas, Nev./Sandpipers of Nevada) and Jonathan Roberts (Southlake, Texas/North Texas Nadadores) highlighted night two of the U.S. Open with their respective wins.
Sullivan took home gold in the women’s 400m free with a time of 4:09.43. She will represent Team USA at the 2017 FINA World Junior Championships later this month. Ashley Twichell followed for second place with a time of 4:10.89. The open water world champion won the 800m freestyle yesterday. Taylor Ault (Hacienda Heights, Calif./La Mirada Armada) picked up her second bronze of the meet with a 4:11.12.
“It was really exciting going into it. I felt really smooth and long,” Sullivan said. “It gave me a good amount of confidence because I wasn’t really tapered going into this meet, and hopefully I’ll be a little more rested going into [world junior championships].”
In the men’s 200m backstroke, former Junior National Team member Roberts topped the field with a 1:56.88. Roberts was a finalist in the 200m free at the 2016 Olympic Trials. Two-time Olympic medalist Arkady Vyatchanin placed second with a 1:57.13. South Africa’s Christopher Reid took third with a time of 1:58.95.
