Relay Gold, McCarty's Multi-Medal Performance Lead U.S. on FINA Swimming World Cup Day Two

The second day of the 2021 FINA Swimming World Cup in Berlin saw the U.S. add five medals to its count, keeping the team on top of the medal table with 12 total medals and in third in the gold-medal rankings with three.
The lone gold for the U.S. today came in the last event of the session, where the U.S. mixed 4x50-meter freestyle relay team captured gold in 1:31.50. The team was comprised of Daniel Diehl (YMCA of Cumberland), Quintin McCarty (Pikes Peak Athletics), Kristina Paegle (Indiana Swim Club) and Carly Novelline (NASA Wildcat Aquatics). Paegle’s 23.78 split on the third leg was the fastest of any female swimmer in the heat.
The top individual finish of the day for the U.S. came via Tom Shields’ (Cal Aquatics) silver medal in the 200m butterfly, finishing only behind the decorated Chad Le Clos of South Africa. Shields’ 1:50.51 was the third fastest swim in the world in the event this year and keeps him as one of only three swimmers this year to go sub-1:51. He is now two-for-two in his medal attempts during this week’s competition after winning gold in yesterday’s 100m butterfly.
Before he captured gold in the mixed 4x50m freestyle relay team, McCarty (Pike’s Peak Aquatics) won his first individual medal of the competition, going 23.64 to capture bronze in the 50-meter backstroke. McCarty has had a busy meet so far, appearing in four finals in just two days and tallying two medals.
Blake Pieroni (Sandpipers of Nevada) added a bronze of his own courtesy of the 100m freestyle, where he was matched up against fellow Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 medalists Kyle Chalmers (AUS) and Matthew Temple (AUS). Pieroni’s bronze gives him his second medal of the meet after finishing third in yesterday’s 100m I.M. The trio of Pieroni, McCarty and Shields are now the only U.S. swimmers to cumulate multiple medals in Berlin.
Also winning bronze was Lydia Jacoby (Seward Tsunami Swim Team), whose bronze in the 100m breaststroke came in a new personal-best time of 1:05.20. The time puts Jacoby as the eighth fastest in the world in the event this year.
