Ledecky Goes 15:39 in TYR Pro Swim Series Westmont Opener

Katie Ledecky After Race - 2021 US Open

The TYR Pro Swim Series Westmont debuted Thursday evening, seeing two veteran distance freestylers nab wins on the first day of racing.

The women’s 1500-meter freestyle kicked off with Katie Ledecky (Bethesda, Md./Nation’s Capital Swim Club/Gator Swim Club) capturing the 65th TYR Pro Swim Series win of her career – the most of any athlete in the competition’s history since 2010. Her 15:39.45 time is good for the 15th-fastest swim in history and the 15th time she has ever gone under 15:40, a mark that only one other swimmer has ever bested.

“I’m pleased with that swim,” Ledecky said. “I swam that event only a couple of weeks ago and I was 15:40, so to be a little better than that is good. I haven’t seen my splits or anything but hopefully I swam it pretty well – it felt pretty strong throughout.”

Ledecky was up against one other swimmer in the heat – FMC Aquatic’s Piper Wood Prince, who was swimming in her home pool.

“It was great,” Ledecky said of sharing a lane line with Wood Prince. “She trains at this pool, so she had a lot of her friends watching and I think that provided a lot of energy to both of us.”

The men’s event went to Egypt’s Marwan El Kamash, who went 15:18.45 to edge out Tsunami Swim Team of KC’s Alec Enyeart in a stroke-for-stroke finish that saw Enyeart finish in 15:19.17. The two swapped leads throughout the entire race and saw Enyeart take a three-tenths lead into the final 100 meters before El Kamash closed with a 57.58 100-meter split at the end.

The competition continues tomorrow with the 100m freestyle, 100m breaststroke, 200m butterfly and 400m freestyle. Prelims begin at 9 a.m. CT and finals start at 6 p.m. CT.
