U.S Open Begins in Minneapolis


MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – National Team member Ashley Twichell (Fayetteville, N.Y.), as well as Zach Harting (Madison, Ala.) and Hannah Saiz (Plattsburg, Wis.) earned convincing wins Tuesday on the first night of the 2016 U.S. Open at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.

Twichell earned the gold medal in the 800-meter freestyle with a time of 8:25.31. Hannah Moore (Cary, N.C.) placed second in 8:28.23, and Katy Campbell (La Canada, Calif.) took third in 8:37.17.

Harting powered through the second half of the race to take home gold in the men’s 200m fly with a 1:57.64 over Brazil’s Vini Lanza and Scotland’s Mark Szaranek.

In the women’s 200m fly Saiz won with a time of 2:10.14. Followed by National Team Member Courtney Harnish (York, Pa.) with a 2:12.80 and Madison Homovich (Pittsboro, N.C.) with a 2:13.54.

Other individuals that won on the first night in Minneapolis included:

  • Australia’s Shayna Jack in the women’s 100 free with a 54.37
  • Australia’s William Stockwell in the men’s 100 free with a 49.84
  • Wales’ Daniel Jervis in the 1500m free with a 15:03.99
  • Australia women’s 4x100 free relay with a 3:42.92

The 2016 U.S. Open continues through Saturday with daily prelims at 9 a.m. CT, followed by finals at 5 p.m. CT.
