MESA, Ariz. – The Olympic gold medalist duo of Katie Ledecky (Bethesda, Md./Stanford Swimming) and Simone Manuel (Sugar Land, Texas/Stanford Swimming) were both winners for the second straight night Friday at the 2017 arena Pro Swim Series at Mesa at Skyline Aquatic Center.  

On the back end of a tough double, Ledecky outlasted four of her 2016 Team USA Olympic teammates and touched first in the women’s 200-meter freestyle, winning in 1 minute, 56.31 seconds. That swim came just 24 minutes after a runner-up finish in the women’s 400m IM in 4:38.16 to open Friday’s session. Ledecky also won the 400m free Thursday.

“It went well. It was as tough as I thought it would be – I’m glad it’s over,” Ledecky said. “It’s good to just to put myself in different situations like that.”

Manuel also picked up her second win in Mesa in the women’s 50m free in 24.66. After winning the 100m free Thursday, Manuel also was third in the 200m free earlier in the session Friday in 1:58.98.

“I couldn’t ask for better because my speed usually isn’t there at the beginning of the year. It usually comes at the end, so I’m pretty pleased with my 50 free,” Manuel said.

Other USA Swimming National Team members touching first tonight included:

• Olympic medalist Chase Kalisz (Bel Air, Md./North Baltimore Aquatic Club) in the men’s 400m IM in 4:11.01
• Olympian Jacob Pebley (Corvallis, Ore./California Aquatics) in the men’s 200m back in 1:56.88
• Eva Merrell (Newport Beach, Calif./Aquazot Swim Club) in the women’s 200m back in 2:11.63

International winners Friday included Canada’s Mary-Sophie Harvey in the women’s 400m IM in 4:38.05, Dylan Carter of Trinidad & Tobago in the men’s 200m free in 1:48.45 and Finland’s Ari-Pekka Liukkonen in the men’s 50m free 21.94.

The three-day meet continues through Saturday with daily prelims at 9 a.m. PT followed by finals at 5 p.m. Two days of television coverage from Mesa will air on delay on NBC Sports Network – Friday, April 14 and Saturday, April 15 at 1:30 a.m. ET. All three finals sessions also will be streamed live via NBC Sports, while a live webcast of the entire meet also will be available at usaswimming.org.
