Mike Unger Named USA Swimming's Interim CEO

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - USA Swimming has announced that Mike Unger, USA Swimming Chief Operating Officer and a dedicated employee since 1993, has been named Interim CEO for the 400,000-member organization.

In his 24 years at the national governing body, Unger has served as Chief Operating Officer, Assistant Executive Director, National Events Director, Marketing Director and National Team Coordinator.

As part of his work with USA Swimming, he oversees all major events, including the U.S. Olympic Trials, the Golden Goggle Awards, the Duel in the Pool and Pan Pacific Championships. Additionally, he supervises the Information Technology, Member Services and the Times and Performance departments. Unger is also involved with USA Swimming’s international relations efforts. 

Since 1996 Unger has been involved with all of USA Swimming’s television broadcasts, and has worked “on loan” with NBC Sports, the U.S. Olympic network. He has assisted with television production for the past six summer Olympics (Atlanta, Sydney, Athens, Beijing, London and Rio de Janeiro) and won three Emmy awards as part of the NBC production team.

From 2003 through 2006, Unger was the Managing Director for the FINA World Cup Swimming series, serving as the key liaison between FINA and the local organizers, broadcasters and delegations attending the competitions.

Unger has an undergraduate degree in journalism from the University of Wisconsin, where he was a member of the swim team, and a Master’s degree in Sport Management from the University of Massachusetts. He resides in Colorado Springs, Colorado, with his wife, Lisa, and their two daughters, Nicole and Natalie.
