Jonathan Roberts Adds Second Win at U.S. Open


East Meadow, N.Y. – On night three of the U.S. Open, Jonathan Roberts (Southlake, Texas/North Texas Nadadores) picked up his second individual title of the meet Friday at the Nassau County Aquatics Center.

Roberts, who touched first in the 200m back on Thursday, won the men’s 400-meter individual medley with a time of 4:14.93. National Junior Team member Charlie Swanson (Richmond, Va./Unattached) followed with a 4:15.99. Kieran Smith (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield Aquatic Club) rounded out the top-three finishers, turning in a time of 4:18.81. Smith will represent Team USA at the FINA World Junior Swimming Championships at the end of the month in the 200m backstroke, along with the 200m and 400m individual medley events.

“I definitely think this summer has been in line with what I’ve been doing the past couple of years,” Roberts said. “I’m just excited to have great results and see hard work pay off, not just for me but for my coaches … it’s very encouraging.”

National Team member Matthew Josa (California Aquatics) picked up the men’s 100-meter butterfly win in 52.15. Tripp Cooper (The Woodlands, Texas/Texas Aquatics) followed with a 52.37. Junior National Team member Maxime Rooney (Livermore, Calif./Pleasanton Seahawks) took third place with a time of 52.45.

In the women’s 400m IM, Sharli Brady (Burlington, Ky./University of Missouri) won the title with a time of 4:42.70, nearly a 4 second drop from her preliminary time. France’s Fantine LeSaffre followed for second place with a 4:43.25. Vanessa Pearl (McKinney, Texas/Metroplex Aquatics) placed third with a time of 4:44.80.

France’s Marie Wattel won the women’s 100m butterfly with a 57.53, a new meet record.

The 2017 U.S. Open continues through Sunday with daily prelims at 9 a.m. ET and finals at 5 p.m. ET. Following this week’s U.S. Open, the Nassau County Aquatics Center will host the Speedo Junior National Championships from Aug. 8-12.
