Complete Day 1 Results

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Andrew Abruzzo (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth Whitemarsh Aquatics) won gold in the men’s 400-meter freestyle to lead the United States on Wednesday at the 2017 FINA World Junior Championships, presented by Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., at the Indiana University Natatorium.

In the opening event of the night, Abruzzo claimed the first gold medal of the meet, surging from third at the 300-meter mark to touch in 3 minutes, 49.19 seconds. Hungary’s Balazs Hollo took silver in 3:49.97, with Trey Freeman (Salt Lake City, Utah/Baylor Swim Club) earning bronze for the United States in 3:50.14.

“I was so excited to represent Team USA. I was the first swim this morning, and it was exhilarating getting on the blocks with everyone being so excited and so supportive,” Abruzzo said. “I was so excited to set the tone like that for the first night and the whole meet.”

The six-day meet continues through Monday with daily prelims at 9:30 a.m. EDT and finals and semifinals at 6 p.m.

In the women’s 400m individual medley, Madison Homovich (Pittsboro, N.C./Marlins of Raleigh) finished fifth in 4:45.68, while Christin Rockway (Valrico, Fla./Tampa Bay Aquatics) touched sixth in 4:47.09. Japan’s Miku Kojima earned gold in 4:39.14.

The U.S. men’s 400m free relay just missed the podium touching in 3:18.68, good for fourth place by just over a tenth of a second. Hungary took gold in 3:17.99.

Team USA also was fourth in the women’s 800m free relay with a time of 8:02.40. Canada took home gold in a world junior record time of 7:51.47.
