Michael Andrew Breaks Two Junior World Records in Prelims of Junior Worlds

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Unites States’ Michael Andrew set two world junior records Friday in the prelim session of the FINA World Junior Swimming Championships.

Andrew set the first in the 50m backstroke, turning in a time 24.63, smashing the former mark of 24.94 by about three-tenths of a second.

He was back in the pool a short time later, setting the world junior record in the 50m freestyle in 21.75. The former record, set by Yu Hexin of China in 2014, was 22.00.

“I think God did a crazy thing there,” Andrew said. “Those were ‘Holy Spirit Swims’ I like to say.

“I came into this morning after a pretty rough night last night. I just have 50s left. I love the 50s, everybody knows that. So I really wanted to swim fast. My goal coming into this was just to get under 22 in the free, and under 24.94 in the back, so I’m so happy. So excited.”
