Michael Andrew (Lawrence, Kan./Race Pace Club) won his third gold medal of the 2017 FINA World Junior Championships, presented by Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., on Sunday with a victory and junior world record in the men’s 50-meter butterfly at the Indiana University Natatorium.

Andrew finished in 23.22 seconds, besting his previous junior world record of 23.27 set in Saturday’s semifinal, to earn his fourth medal in Indianapolis. He also has wins – and junior world records – in the 50m freestyle and 50m backstroke, as well as a bronze medal in the 100m breaststroke.

“Coming into the meet, the goal was to swim as fast as I possibly could and for that to have happened up to this point, I’m super satisfied,” Andrew said. 

In the final race of the night, the United States women raced to silver in the 400m free relay in a time of 3:39.69 with Lucie Nordmann (The Woodlands, Texas/Magnolia Aquatic Club), Alex Walsh (Nashville, Tenn./Nashville Aquatic Club), Julia Cook (Bryan, Texas/Aggie Swim Club) and Grace Ariola (Bloomington, Ill./WAVES Bloomington/Normal Y Swim Team) comprising the Team USA lineup.

Earlier in the session, Ariola picked up the bronze medal in the women’s 50m backstroke in 28.11, edging teammate Regan Smith (Lakeville, Minn./Riptide Swimming) who was fourth in 28.12.

“My goal coming into this meet was to get an individual medal and I was definitely not expecting it in the 50 back … to be able to medal in it and have it be my first individual international medal is so special,” Ariola said.

In other finals, Erica Sullivan (Las Vegas, Nev./Sandpipers of Nevada) was fourth in the women’s 1500m free in 16:20.12, and Kieran Smith (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield Aquatic Club) took fourth in the men’s 400m individual medley in 4:17.63.

The six-day meet concludes Monday with daily prelims at 9:30 a.m. EDT and finals and semifinals at 6 p.m.
