Olympian Chase Kalisz Wins Twice at TYR Pro Swim Series at Mesa

MESA, Ariz. – Olympic medalist and world champion Chase Kalisz (Bel Air, Md./Athens Bulldog Swim Club) was victorious twice, and Olympic champion Nathan Adrian (Bremerton, Wash./California Aquatics) topped the men’s 100-meter freestyle on Friday evening at the TYR Pro Swim Series at Mesa at Skyline Aquatic Center.

After winning the 400m individual medley in windy conditions on Thursday, Kalisz (Bel Air, Md./Athens Bulldog Swim Club) picked up victory No. 1 tonight in the men’s 200m fly in a time of 1 minute, 56.69 seconds and came back about 50 minutes later to take the men’s 200m IM in 1:57.68 for his third win of the meet. He continues to top the men’s TYR Pro Swim Series standings.

Adrian won his signature men’s 100m free in 48.84. “I can’t complain about coming under 49 [seconds],” Adrian said. “We came off of Atlanta and went to Colorado Springs and hit it really hard up there. That training has made its way to this point in the season.”

Olivia Smoliga (Glenview, Ill./Athens Bulldog Swim Club) picked up her second backstroke win in Mesa, posting a time of 1:00.08 in the women’s 100m back after winning the 200m back last night. Ryan Murphy (Jacksonville, Fla./California Aquatics) matched that feat on the men’s side, touching in 53.98 in to take the men’s 100m back title.

Olympic medalist Leah Smith (Pittsburgh, Pa./Tucson Ford Dealers Aquatics) earned her second win in Mesa in the women’s 800m free in 8:31.79, while National Team member Zane Grothe (Boulder City, Nev./Mission Viejo Nadadores) took the men’s 800m free in 7:55.53.

Other winners on Friday included Hali Flickinger (Spring Grove, Pa./Athens Bulldog Swim Club) in the women’s 200m fly in 2:09.77, Molly Hannis (Santa Rosa, Calif./Tennessee Aquatics) in the women’s 100m breast in 1:06.65, Michael Andrew (Lawrence, Kan./Race Pace Club) in the men’s 100m breast in 1:00.16, Mallory Comerford (Kalamazoo, Mich./University of Louisville) in the women’s 100m free in 54.30 and Melanie Margalis (Clearwater, Fla./ St. Petersburg Aquatics) in the women’s 200m IM in 2:13.90.

The four-day meet continues through Sunday. Saturday prelims open at 9 a.m. PDT followed by finals at 4:40 p.m. The meet concludes Sunday with timed finals for the 1500-meter freestyle at 8 a.m. PDT.
