Travis Takes 7.5K Title to Open FINA World Junior Open Water Championships


EILAT, Israel – USA Swimming National Team member Chase Travis (Newark, Del./Nation’s Capital Swim Club) raced her way to the 7.5-kilometer gold medal on Thursday at the 2018 FINA World Junior Open Water Championships.

Competing in the Red Sea, Travis was among the leaders from the start and eventually touched nearly a minute clear of the field in 1 hour, 32 minutes, 2.8 seconds for the victory. Teammate Leah DeGeorge (Anchorage, Alaska/Bolles School Sharks) finished sixth in the 7.5K event for ages 16-17.

Fellow National Team member Mariah Denigan (Walton, Ky./Northern Kentucky Clippers) also claimed a spot on the podium, earning bronze in the 5K race for ages 14-15 in a time of 1:01:06.6.

Also posting top-10 finishes on Thursday were Jackson Carlile (Fishers, Ind./Fishers Area Swimming Tigers), who was eighth in the boys’ 5K; and Ivan Puskovitch (West Chester, Pa./Episcopal Academy Aquatic Club), who was eighth in the boys’ 7.5K.  

The competition resumes Friday with the 10K for ages 18-19 and continues Saturday with team relay events.
