Over 130 athletes took to the water at Miami Marine Stadium on Saturday morning to compete for the 5k Junior National Championship. The event was the second of three exciting open water races in south Florida this weekend and included some impressive times that showcased a great future for American open water swimming.

The junior men’s 5k began the morning’s session and featured a total of 57 competitors. Every top-8 finisher boasted a sub-one hour time, but in the end it was Dylan Becker (Sandpipers of Nevada) who took the title in 58:18.48. Becker earned the title on short rest following his race in yesterday’s 10k event. By competing in tomorrow’s 5k as well, the Sandpipers of Nevada swimmer will have totaled 20,000 meters in the water by the conclusion of the weekend.

Of the six open water competitors on the U.S. National Junior Team roster, Jackson Carlile (Fishers Area Swimming Tigers) was the top finisher, touching in 58:57.41, good for seventh place. Carlile has proven to be a swimmer to watch for the future, as his performance marks his second-consecutive year placing in the top-8 in the 5k at Open Water Junior National Championships. While his time on Saturday morning was faster than his 2018 National Championships performance, Carlile won the event in 2018 with a time of 59:57.91

Following the men’s 5k, 70 swimmers entered the Miami waters to compete for the junior women’s 5k. When all was said and done, Chase Travis (Nation’s Capital Swim Club) took the title in 1:02:07.57. Travis, one of only two swimmers in the event to represent Nation’s Capital Swim Club, represented the club well by out-touching the field by nearly 20 seconds.

Travis also competed in yesterday’s 10k event amongst senior swimmers, and impressively took home a top-10 finish in that event as well, recording a 2:01:58.07 mark, good for ninth place. Much like her winning male counterpart in Becker, Travis will compete in tomorrow’s senior 5k, giving the 16-year-old Virginia Tech commit nearly 12 and a half miles swam this weekend. Should Travis finish in a top-10 position, she'll be the only swimmer to have placed as high in all three events of the competition.

Travis will join almost 40 other female swimmers competing in tomorrow morning’s 5k. Haley Anderson (Granite Bay, Calif./Trojan Swim Club) and Ashley Twichell (Fayetteville, N.Y./TAC Titans) will look to follow up on a their top-3 finishes from Friday’s 10k, while other National Team athletes such as Erica Sullivan (Las Vegas, Nev./Sandpipers of Nevada), Hannah Moore (Cary, N.C./Wolfpack Elite) and Mariah Denigan (Walton, Ky./Northern KY Clippers Swimming)  will be vying for a top finish of their own.

Sixty-three athletes from eight different countries round out tomorrow’s men’s 5k. Jordan Wilimovsky (Malibu, Calif./Team Santa Monica) yielded the highest American finish from Friday’s 10k, finishing second in 1:50:57.35. Swimming alongside Wilimovsky will be Charlie Swanson (Richmond, Va./Club Wolverine), Taylor Abbot (Cedar Park, Texas/University of Tennessee) and David Heron (Cedar Park, Texas/University of Tennessee) among others.

Sunday’s 5k action begins at 7:30 a.m. ET, and will be available via live-stream at usaswimming.org.
