TAIPEI – Justin Ress (Cary, N.C./NC State) touched first in the men’s 100-meter backstroke for his second gold medal in as many nights, and Andrew Wilson (Bethesda, Md./Longhorn Aquatics) tied for gold in the men’s 100m breaststroke on Monday at the 2017 World University Games.

Ress, who also won gold in the men’s 400m freestyle relay on Sunday, touched in 53.29 seconds to edge Japan’s Kosuke Hagnio for his second appearance atop the podium. Taylor Dale (Dalton, Ga./Athens Bulldog Swim Club) was seventh in 54.53.

“It’s really good just to get more and more experience as I go on. I’ve fixed a small think from prelims to semifinals to finals each time,” said Ress, who also swam the 50m back at the 2017 FINA World Championships. “It’s all about experience for me. I’m new to international swim meets, so it’s good to really nail this first race of the meet.

In the men’s 100m breast, Wilson finished in 1:00.15, good for a gold-medal tie with Ilya Shymanovich of Belarus. Jacob Montague (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich./University of Michigan) finished sixth in 1:00.93.

Also medaling for the United States on Monday was Bridgette Alexander (Milton, Wis./University of Kentucky), who earned bronze in the women’s 200m back with a time of 2:10.30. Asia Seidt (Louisville, Ky./Lakeside Swim Team) finished fourth, just missing the podium in 2:10.31.

In other finals, Hellen Moffitt (Alexandria, Va./North Carolina) and Katie McLaughlin (Dana Point, Calif./California Aquatics) finished sixth and eighth, respectively, in the women’s 50m butterfly.
