Quotes
Ashley Twichell (On balancing pool and open water swimming): “I think that training the mile will really help with the open water races. Open water races come down to the last 400 or 500, so having the speed at the end is really critical. I’ve been focusing more on open water, but all my training is in the pool. With that swim tonight, I’ll definitely be on focusing on the mile as well.”Women’s 200m Individual Medley
1. Kathleen Baker (Winston Salem, N.C./Team Elite), 2:08.32
2. Melanie Margalis (Clearwater, Fla./Saint Petersburg Aquatics), 2:09.43
3. Ella Eastin (Irvine, Calif./Stanford Swimming), 2:10.84
Race Notes
- Baker set a U.S. Open record with a lifetime best of 2:08.32 in the 200m IM.
- Baker won a share of her third title in Irvine. She set a world record in winning the 100m back and tied for the 200m back title. Baker has five career long-course national titles.
Quotes
Kathleen Baker (On her meet): “This has been so much fun. I’m really happy with all of my times throughout this meet and to have so many people step up and do so great and to have such great competition here is really awesome.”
Baker (On her U.S. Open record): “That was definitely faster than I thought. I was hoping for a 2:10 or 2:09, but to go a 2:08 and really come home strong means my training is there.”

2. Abrahm DeVine (Seattle, Wash./Stanford Swimming), 1:57.41

Quotes
Chase Kalisz (On the breaststroke leg of the IM): “I honestly can’t wait to hit the breaststroke. I know that’s my best split, but, honestly, it’s my easiest split. Breaststroke just comes naturally to me in my IM. I’ve struggled with it individually where I don’t necessarily have the right race plan yet.”
Men’s 800m Freestyle
1. Zane Grothe (Boulder City, Nev./Mission Viejo Nadadores), 7:44.57

- Tonight’s victory marked Grothe’s first career national title in the 800m free.
Quotes
Zane Grothe (On swimming the 800m free): "The 800 has always been a big focus of mine. Because of it not being an Olympic event, not many people would do it. It was my first ever U.S. Open medal and my first time ever breaking into world rankings, so I've always favored it."
Women’s 50m Freestyle
1. Simone Manuel (Sugar Land, Texa/Stanford Swimming), 24.10
2. Abbey Weitzeil (Saugus, Calif./California Aquatics), 24.63
3. Margo Geer (Milford Center, Ohio/Mission Viejo Nadadores), 24.79

Phelps won five. Missy Franklin won four events at 2013 Nationals.

Andrew (On what went well tonight): “I do feel like my swimming has gotten really strong and that’s kind of where I increased that gap [with Caeleb Dressel] in the back half.”
