Top Swims From the 2020 Black History Invitational Swim Meet

by USA Swimming
In what would have been its 35th year of competition, the historic Black History Invitational Swim Meet in Washington D.C. had to be put on pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The annual meet takes place to celebrate and create an opportunity for Black swimmers, while also allowing Black officials, coaches and parents to network and grow the Black swimming community.
Though the 2021 event could not happen, the legacy and excitement for the competition continues on. While participants look ahead to future meets, there is plenty to look back on as far as swims that the meet has produced.
Here are the top swims (based on Hy-Tek Power Points) from the most recent Black History Invitational Meet, which took place February 14-16, 2020.
10-and-Unders
At just nine years old, Sydney Campbell went 28.67 in the 50-yard freestyle to capture first place. She was one of only two swimmers to finish with a sub-:30 time, and also captured top-5 finishes in the 200y freestyle and 50y butterfly. For the boys, it was Noland Barrett who stole the show, capturing first-place finishes in the 50y freestyle, 50y butterfly and 50y backstroke. The three swims earned Barret over 800 Hytek power points per swim, while no other 10-and-under male reached the 800 mark once.
11-12's
Leading the way in the 11-12's was Zachary Fayed, who was responsible for four of the top-10 swims of all ages at last year's competition. His 57.49 performance in the 100y backstroke was the top swim of the event and led to one of his six event wins in the competition. On the girl's side, it was Kaliyah Hinson's 200y butterfly time of 2:19.08 that went down as the top swim.
13-14's
Coming in as the No. 2 swim of all ages and the top swim among 13-14-year-old boys was Rian Graham, who went 54.24 in the 100y butterfly. At the end of the meet, Graham captured wins in three of the four events he competed in. In the girls division, Brookelyn Weinberg's 100y breaststroke time of 1:06.34 came away as the top swim. Weinberg would go on to sweep the breaststroke events after 2:25.18, over seven seconds ahead of the competition, in the 200y breaststroke.
15-16's
In the 15-16 division, Elena Booher recorded the top swim, going 2:06.10 in the 200y backstroke to finish first. Her time was over five seconds ahead of the competition and shaved three seconds off of the previous meet record. Daevin Oey came away with the top time in the boys 15-16 boys division, capturing the 100y freestyle in 48.53.
17-18's
Jazz Barry's 200y breaststroke time of 2:21.60 earned top spot for the girls' 17-18 division. The time gave Barry the win and also took down the previous meet record, which she had set in 2019. Zichao Liang posted the top swim in the boys division, going 59.86 in the 100y breaststroke to mark the only sub-1:00 swim in the field to earn the victory.
