USA Swimming Hires New Secretary & General Counsel and Program Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
by USA Swimming
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – USA Swimming announced today the hiring of two new strategic leaders, bringing on board Michelle Steinfeld as Secretary & General Counsel and Leland Brown III as Program Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI).
“I am proud to welcome Michelle and Leland to the team,” USA Swimming President & CEO Tim Hinchey III said. “Their corporate experiences and passion for their roles will be of tremendous benefit to this organization and our membership. They are talented, hardworking individuals who will continue to make us better leaders and better global citizens.”
Steinfeld brings a strong litigation background across both corporate and law firm environments. Most recently, she managed the litigation portfolio for public oil and gas company Ovintiv, following time at law firms Davis Graham & Stubbs and Covington & Burling LLP. She received her J.D., magna cum laude and Order of the Coif, from Georgetown University Law Center and an undergraduate degree, magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa, from Vanderbilt University.
Steinfeld takes over the role of Secretary & General Counsel from Chief Administrative Officer Lucinda McRoberts and will report to Hinchey.
Brown III joins USA Swimming from Promise Prep in Indianapolis, where he most recently held the position of Director of Operations. Prior to this, he served in the Office of Inclusion at the NCAA. Brown III has an extensive hosting and keynote speaker portfolio, from many notable DEI events, and brings with him incredible passion and a successful history of advocacy in the DEI space.
Brown III holds a Bachelor of Arts, Communication Arts, Literary studies, and Secondary Education from Bethel College-North Newton and a Master of Science in Sports Administration Research with a focus on Race/Ethnicity and Gender Equity from the University of Cincinnati.
In this role, Brown III will be the organizational leader responsible for enhancing the development of a vision and strategy to diversify USA Swimming membership, ensure equitable practices throughout the sport, and to focus on creating and implementing strategic initiatives to help drive DEI priorities with new members, program partners and the swimming community.
He has recently relocated to Colorado Springs and will report to Senior Director of Legal and Member Affairs Abigail Howard.
