World Drowning Prevention Day


Though countless organizations work every day to prevent drownings, this Sunday (July 25) will be the first World Drowning Prevention Day as declared through a UN General Assembly Resolution back in April.

Drowning is one of the leading causes of death for youth 5-14 so for this inaugural World Drowning Prevention Day, we highlight some of the lifesaving ways to prevent it. Check out these five resources to help keep you and those around you safer in the water:

Find a Lesson Provider Near You 
With more than 1,200 swim lesson providers in our network and more than 3,000 clubs across the country, there are plenty of opportunities for you and those around you to join the sport of swimming - whether it be through learning to swim or joining a competitive team. Aquatics Coalition Resources
In June 2020, more than 20 organizations, spanning from learn-to-swim programs, health and rehabilitation groups to competitive aquatics organizations, joined together to form the Aquatics Coalition. While the group was formed to help water-based facilities reopen after the COVID-19 shutdowns, there are many tips and resources that apply today. Visit www.aquatics-coalition.org for more info. 

Water Safety Tips for This Summer
With the summer of 2021 in full swing, read this article to see some of the tips and tricks to help mitigate the risk of drowning for both yourself and those around you. This article provides advice on how to monitor children in the water, tools for your own safety and even how to work with your community to create a safer environment for those around you.

Water Safety Quiz
The American Red Cross put together a water safety quiz to see if you can perform the basic swimming skills needed to be safe in water. Take the quiz here
