Tokyo Olympics: Day Four Prelims Notes
The fourth prelims session of the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 sent four swimmers to the next session’s semifinals along with a relay team and a distance freestyler to the upcoming finals. Bobby Finke headlined the session, setting a new American record in the men’s 800m freestyle.

Men's 100m freestyle
• Caeleb Dressel (second seed, 47.73) and Zach Apple (11th seed, 48.16) advance to semifinals.
• Dressel finished second in his heat, posting splits of 22.89 and 24.84.
• Apple finished third in his heat, posting splits of 22.97 and 25.19.
• U.S. has 30 total medals in the event, one of only two events where U.S. has 30 or more medals.
Women's 200m butterfly
• Hali Flickinger (second seed, 2:08.31) and Regan Smith (fourth seed, 2:08.46) advance to semifinals.
• Flickinger won her heat. Her 2:08.31 is the fourth fastest U.S. time this year.
• Smith finished second in her heat in 2:08.46 – the time is Smith’s eighth fastest of her career.
Men's 200m Breaststroke
• Nic Fink (fourth seed, 2:08.48) advances to the final. Andrew Wilson (17th, 2:09.97) misses the final by two one-hundredths.
• Fink won his heat. He was in fourth place at the 150-meter mark before a 32.89 final split carried him into first.
• 2:08.48 is the third-fastest time of Fink’s career.
Men's 4x200m freestyle relay
• U.S. (5th seed, 7:05.62) advances to final.
• Prelim relay order: Drew Kibler, Andrew Seliskar, Patrick Callan, Blake Pieroni.
• Second-through-sixth place finishers were separated by just more than six tenths.
• U.S. has won gold at each Olympic Games dating back to 2004.
Men's 800m freestyle
• Bobby Finke (third seed, 7:42.72) advances to final. Michael Brinegar (17th, 7:53.00) misses final.
• Finke sets new American record, besting Michael McBroom’s 7:43.60 record from 2013.
• Finke’s time is five-and-a-half seconds faster than his time at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials and 4.86 seconds faster than his previous personal best.
• Olympic debut of event.
Action from Tokyo resumes at 10:30 a.m. JST / 9:30 p.m. ET with finals of the women’s 200m freestyle, men’s 200m butterfly, women’s 200m I.M., women’s 1500m freestyle and men’s 4x200m freestyle relay. Semifinals of the men’s 100m freestyle, women’s 200m butterfly and men’s 200m breaststroke will also take place.
