USA Swimming Announces 2021-22 U.S. National Junior Team Roster

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – USA Swimming, the national governing body for the sport of swimming in the United States, today announced the names of 79 athletes who will represent the 2021-22 U.S. National Junior Team.
This year’s roster represents 26 states and 61 clubs. Nation’s Capital Swim Club and TAC Titans are the highest-represented club with four athletes, followed by Sandpipers of Nevada and SwimMAC Carolina with three each. North Carolina is the highest-represented state with 10 athletes, followed by California with eight.
Of the athletes selected to this year’s National Junior Team, Justina Kozan (Brea, Calif./Mission Viejo Nadadores) is the only rostered athlete qualified in four events. Kozan is followed by five athletes, including Baylor Nelson (Huntersville, N.C./SwimMAC Carolina) and Summer Smith (Agawam, Mass./Bluefish Swim Club), who are registered in three events each.
Also earning roster spots are 25 junior athletes who competed at the Berlin and Budapest legs of the FINA Swimming World Cup earlier this month. Twelve of those 25 came away with medals, including golds for first-time National Junior Team selections Zhier Fan (Plano, Texas/Metroplex Aquatics), Cavan Gormsen (Wantagh, N.Y./Long Island Aquatic Club), Quintin McCarty (Colorado Springs, Colo./Pikes Peak Athletics), Carly Novelline (Wilmette, Ill./NASA Wildcat Aquatics) and more.
Sixty-one of the 72 pool swimmers on this year’s roster made an appearance at Wave II of the U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Swimming in Omaha, Nebraska this past June. Josh Matheny (Pittsburgh, Pa./Team Pittsburgh Elite Aquatics) posted the highest finish by a male on this year’s National Junior Team, finishing fifth in the 100-meter breaststroke. On the women’s side, eighth place finishes by Kozan in the 400m I.M. and Gormsen in the 400m freestyle headlined the top Trials finishes. In total, 34 athletes named to this year’s National Junior Team posted top-20 finishes at Wave II of Trials.
