Carmel Swim Club set a new meet record in the women’s 4x50-yard medley relay in the East meet, while Sandpipers of Nevada and Rose Bowl Aquatics lowered the meet records in the women’s and men’s 4x200y free relays at the West meet to highlight the first night of racing at the 2021 Speedo Winter Junior Championships in Austin, Texas (West) and Greensboro, N.C. (East).
At the Greensboro Aquatic Center, Carmel Swim Club got the meet off to a record-breaking start with a 1:37.60 in the women’s 4x50y medley relay, breaking the overall Juniors meet record of 1:37.65 set by Fort Collins Area Swim Team back in 2017. Berit Berglund (24.13), Devon Kitchel (27.50), Alex Shackell (23.47) and Meghan Christman (22.50) were a part of the winning relay. The foursome from TAC Titans finished almost four seconds behind in 1:41.26, while Club Wolverine grabbed third in 1:41.59.
Carmel swept the women’s relays as Shackell (1:46.37), Berglund (1:49.16), Lynsey Bowen (1:48.04) and Gretchen Lueking (1:48.27) combined efforts to post a 7:11.84 in the 4x200 yard freestyle relay, comfortably ahead of Sarasota Sharks’ 7:13.49 and Dynamo Swim Club’s 7:15.66.
On the men’s side, SwimMAC Carolina’s Caleb Maldari (22.70), Cam Abaquetta (24.71), Logan Zucker (20.77) and Baylor Nelson (19.17) posted a 1:27.35 to take home the men’s medley relay win. The Mason Manta Rays’ quartet of Avery Clapp, Adam McDonald, Carl Bloebaum and Gibson Holmes out-touched Bolles School for second, 1:28.22 to 1:28.27.
SwimMAC Carolina also took home the men’s 4x200 yard free relay with Zucker (1:35.55), Alex Ayers (1:39.02), Maldari (1:37.89) and Nelson (1:34.53) swimming a 6:26.99 to outdistance TAC Titans (6:30.26) and SwimAtlanta (6:31.68).
Night one of the West championships at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center kicked off with finals of the women's 4x50 yard medley relay, where the University of Denver Hilltoppers foursome of Charlotte Wilson (25.30), Emma Weber (27.49), Lexi Greenhawt (24.19) and Lawson Ficken (22.43) cruised to a near one-second win in 1:39.41. Sandpipers of Nevada, which featured 2020 U.S. Olympians Katie Grimes on backstroke and Bella Sims on butterfly, touched second in 1:40.33. DART Swimming rounded out the top three in 1:40.41.
In the men’s 4x50y medley relay, Nitro Swimming topped the field with a 1:28.87, thanks to Logan Walker (22.49), Thomas Wu (25.28), George Flanders (21.44) and Jeremy Kelly (19.66). Coronado Swim Association claimed second in 1:29.14, with Rose Bowl Aquatics in third at 1:29.28.
Shortly after swimming the medley relay, Grimes (1:44.96) and Sims (1:43.56) joined forces with Claire Weinstein (1:45.40) and Paige Kuwata (1:48.98) to lower the Juniors West and overall meet record in the women’s 4x200y free relay with a 7:02.90. They completely dominated the event as second place Irvine Novaquatics finished 12 seconds behind in 7:14.79, while Elevation Athletics took third in 7:19.13.
The men’s 4x200y free relay featured a nail-biter between Rose Bowl Aquatics and Lakeside Aquatics, as the teams were locked in and separated by only a second or two throughout the entire race. At the finish, Rose Bowl’s Zach Larrick just got in ahead of Lakeside’s Conor McKenna, 6:29.57 to 6:29.66. First Colony took third in 6:34.16.
