Curzan Breaks 100y Fly American Record, Climbs Ranks in 100y Back

Claire Curzan is at it again.
The 17-year-old TAC Titans phenom is currently competing at the 4A NCHSAA State Championships, where her performances in yesterday’s finals session were headlined by a blazing 49.24 in the 100-yard butterfly, besting the previous American record (49.38) set by her U.S. National Team teammate Erika Brown at the 2020 SEC Championships.
The time bumps her up to No. 2 on the all-time list of short course yards 100 butterfliers, only behind Canada’s Maggie MacNeil.
Curzan’s time shaves nearly three tenths off her previous personal best and marks the fourth time that she has broken the :50 mark in the event. All four of those swims fall in the top-25 performances in history – joining Erika Brown, Louise Hansson (Sweden) and MacNeil (Canada) as athletes with four performances inside the event’s top-25 fastest swims.
The American record was not the only jaw-dropping swim of Curzan’s day, as she also clocked in a 49.61 in the 100y backstroke, moving her up to No. 3 in the history of the event and just a half-second off the world record, which was set by Regan Smith in 2021.
Since 2021, Curzan’s swimming resume has featured an Olympic silver medal, six FINA World Championships (25m) medals, two top-3 performances in SCY history and four top-10 performances in American long course meter history.
Curzan is verbally committed to attend Stanford University in the fall of 2022. To read Curzan’s bio, click here. For more on record and time progressions visit https://www.usaswimming.org/times/data-hub/record-progressions.
