Smith, Camblong Open TYR Pro Swim Series San Antonio With 800 Freestyle Wins

The 2022 TYR Pro Swim Series San Antonio had its opening session Wednesday evening at the Northside Swim Center, seeing Leah Smith and Tommy-lee Camblong cruise to first-place finishes in the 800-meter freestyle.
Smith's win came in 8:22.80, just more than eight seconds ahead of the competition. Her swim shaved four seconds off her performance at the TYR Pro Swim Series Westmont earlier this month and also marks the fastest she has swum the event since 2019.
“That swim felt good, I am pretty happy with my time," Smith said. "I’m just happy to be in San Antonio. This is where our Olympic Team camp was back in 2016 so it brings back some pretty good memories.
“It’s exciting that we are getting so close to [the Phillips 66 International Team Trials], I’m taking things one step at a time. This race was pretty good for me to gear up for a meet like Trials.”
Smith's finish came in front of a Sandpipers of Nevada duo, Bella Sims and Claire Weinstein who finished second and third in 8:30.83 and 8:37.76, respectively.
The men's event was won by France's Tommy-Lee Camblong, who went 7:59.08 to win the event by more than eight seconds. Mikey Calvillo (Indiana University) finished second in 8:07.64 followed by another Sandpiper of Nevada swimmer in Ilya Kharun, whose 8:08.62 swim gave him third-place honors.
For Kharun, the U.S. National Junior Team member who is making his TYR Pro Swim Series career debut this week, his time was nearly 12-and-a-half seconds faster than his previous personal best, which he set just this past January. He is now the fourth-fastest American in the event this year.
Action continues tomorrow with the 200m freestyle, 100m breaststroke, 100m butterfly and 400m individual medley. Prelims begin at 9 a.m. CT and finals start at 6 p.m. CT.
