#FINABudapest2022: Day Five Prelims Notes

The 2022 FINA World Championships continued Wednesday morning in Budapest with the women’s 100-meter freestyle, 200m breaststroke and 4x200m freestyle relay, as well as the men’s 200m backstroke and 200m breaststroke.
A look into the U.S. swimmers who competed this morning:
Women’s 100m Freestyle
• Torri Huske (53.72) and Claire Curzan (54.28) advance to semifinals as the third and 11th seeds.
• Event marks the second of three individual events where Huske and Curzan take the blocks together.
• Huske’s time was 0.37 off her personal best.
• Huske posted splits of 25.76 and 27.96.
• Curzan posted splits of 26.00 and 28.28.
Men’s 200m Backstroke
• Shaine Casas (1:56.66) and Ryan Murphy (1:56.96) punch tickets to semifinals as the first and third seeds.
• Casas was two tenths off his personal best.
• Casas and Murphy were two of only three swimmers, joined by Australia’s Joshua Edwards-Smith (1:56.85), to go sub-1:57 in prelims.
• Casas won his heat by 0.92 seconds
Women’s 200m Breaststroke
• Lilly King swims the second-fastest time of 2:24.46 followed by Kate Douglas with the fourth-fastest time (2:25.54) of prelims.
• Both Douglass and King won their respective heats.
• King’s first 100-meter split of 1:09.32 was the fastest opening split in the field.
Men’s 200m Breaststroke
• Charlie Swanson (2:09.36) and Nic Fink (2:10.27) advance to semifinals as the third and ninth seeds, respectively.
• Swanson makes FINA World Championships debut, as well as his international 200m breaststroke debut.
• Fink swims the event at his third FINA World Championships. He finished 10th in 2015 and fifth in 2017.
Women’s 4x200m Freestyle Relay
• U.S. claims top seed in the final with a 7:49.25. The team sits behind Australia (1:47.61) and China (7:49.08).
• Alex Walsh led off with a 1:57.94 split, followed by Claire Weinstein’s 1:58.35, Hali Flickinger’s 1:57.05 and closing with Bella Sims’ 1:55.91.
• Sims’ 1:55.91 split was the fastest split, by 0.58 seconds, of any individual in prelims.
• Should the U.S. medal in prelims, it would give Flickinger her third FINA World Championships medal, Walsh her second and Weinstein and Sims their first.
