Four Swimmers Earn ESPYS Nominations

by USA Swimming
ESPN recently announced the nominations for the 2022 ESPYS and four swimmers are among the prestigious list of nominees in five separate categories.
Ten-time Olympic medalist Katie Ledecky earned nominations in two separate categories: Best Athlete, Women’s Sports and Best Olympian, Women’s Sports. Ledecky has been nominated in various categories in 2016, 2017 and 2018 but has yet to win the award.
Ledecky recently surpassed Natalie Coughlin as the most decorated female athlete ever at the FINA World Championships when she added four gold medals to her lifetime haul, bringing her career world championships total to 22.
With four additional Olympic medals (two gold and two silver), Ledecky became the most decorated female individual gold medalist in Olympic history via her performances in Tokyo. She won the 800-meter and 1500m freestyle events, finished second in the 400m freestyle with the fourth-fastest performance all time, and anchored the 4x200m freestyle relay to a silver medal and the American record with the fastest split in the entire race (1:53.7).
Caeleb Dressel received a nomination for Best Olympian, Men’s Sports. At the 2020 Olympic Games, Dressel won five gold medals (three in all his individual events) and broke two world records in Tokyo. He also became just the fourth male swimmer to ever win five gold medals for the U.S. at a single Olympic Games.
Jessica Long has once again been nominated for Best Athlete with a Disability, Women’s Sports. She’s the second-most decorated American Paralympian and has 29 Paralympic medals to her credit – six earned at the 2020 Paralympic Games alone. She has won the award three times previously.
Brad Snyder also received a nomination for Best Athlete with a Disability, Men’s Sports. Snyder, who had won seven Paralympic swimming medals in two previous Games appearances added another gold medal to his tally in 2021 with the first medal ever won by an American male triathlete at the Olympic or Paralympic Games.
Winners are selected by fan vote. Fans can cast their vote at ESPN.com/ESPYS, and a list of The 2022 ESPYS nominees is available here.
The 2022 ESPYS will broadcast live on Wednesday, July 20 at 8 p.m. ET
