Margin of Victory on Display at FINA Open Water World Junior Championships

2022 Open Water World Juniors 4x1500 Relay

Last month, a team of 12 Americans took to Mahe, Seychelles to compete at the FINA Open Water World Junior Championships. The competition saw an American medalist in four events — Katie Grimes (gold) in the 7.5K, Claire Weinstein (gold) in the 5K, Nathan Szobota (gold) in the 5K and the American relay team of Grimes, Weinstein, Szobota and Sam Marsteiner winning gold in the 14-16-year-old 4x1500m freestyle relay.

With open-water races often spanning long ranges of time, the events can either be won by a landslide or come down to the final sprint. This was evidenced at the meet in Seychelles, seeing the margin of victory span from 0.003% all the way to 4.03%.

Grimes' 7.5K title was the biggest blowout among women's events, as she stopped the clock in 1:22:38.50, more than two minutes ahead of the field. On the other side of the spectrum was Szobota's gold, which saw him finish just 0.2 seconds ahead of Italy's Davide Grossi.

A complete breakdown of the competition's margin of victory can be found below.
