Character Lab to Provide Additional Resources to USA Swimming Coaches

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – USA Swimming, the national governing body for the sport of swimming in the United States, today announced its affiliation with Character Lab, a non-profit organization which bridges researchers and educators to help kids thrive through evidence-based resources.
“Coaches have requested additional educational resources around character development and education, and the Character Lab assets are researched-based examples we all can learn from,” said Joel Shinofield, managing director of sport development, USA Swimming. “USA Swimming is excited to provide these complimentary tools to our coaching members to continue education and provide proven methods to keep athletes, coaches and parents engaged in the sport longer.”
The Character Lab resources include web-based playbooks, activities and tips that align with USA Swimming’s American Development Model (ADM). USA Swimming’s ADM is focused on four critical athlete-centered outcomes with the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee’s (USOPC) Quality Coaching Framework: 1. Competence, 2. Character, 3. Confidence, and 4. Connection.
The Character Lab resources aim to create more effective long-term athlete development planning, practice group design structure and development and progress evaluation of swimmers.
“We're proud to equip coaches with scientific-based insights to support the physical, social and emotional well-being of athletes,” said Dave Hersh, CEO, Character Lab. “By making scientific insights accessible to partners like USA Swimming, we’re ensuring that research ultimately informs actionable strategies that parents, educators, or anyone who cares about young people can take to help kids thrive.”
Available resources can be found here. Sign up for Character Lab’s tip of the week is available here, which includes 60 seconds of actional advice every Sunday.
