Women’s History Month: What You Need to Know

Women’s History Month: What You Need to Know

What is Women’s History Month?
Women’s History Month began as a week-long celebration in 1978 in Santa Rosa, Calif. in accordance with International Women’s Day (March 8).

The celebration quickly grew, gaining support and recognition across the United States. In 1980, a group of women activists known as the National Women’s History Project campaigned for Women’s History Week to be federally recognized. Their bravery and advocacy transformed Women’s History Week into the month-long celebration it is today.

How Can You Support Women’s History Month?
Uplift Woman Leaders
Ensuring access to opportunities helps women leaders grow professionally and personally. To help provide access, Local Swimming Committees (LSCs) and clubs can allocate available funding specifically for women to attend developmental opportunities. Two available opportunities through USA Swimming are the Women Coaches in Governance Program and the Women’s Leadership Summit.

New in 2022, the Women Coaches in Governance Program was developed by women coach leaders in our sport. It identifies, educates, supports and mentors women coaches who wish to be more involved in organizational governance through a 10-week virtual course, fellowship and opportunity to attend the USA Swimming Workshop presented by LiveBarn in April. LSCs are encouraged to nominate female coaches when applications for the 2023 program are open later this summer.

The Women’s Leadership Summit helps female coaches strengthen their proficiency in leadership, wellness and coaching. It features immersive educational sessions and interactive connection opportunities between fellow members of the USA Swimming coaching community. This year, the summit includes three virtual sessions and one in-person opportunity. Applications are currently open and can be completed here. The first virtual session will take place the week of March 13.

Recognize and Celebrate Your Women Leaders
It takes a village to run a successful club. Don’t forget to thank your great coaches, volunteers, parents and other staff who help support your athletes in and out of the water. Use the below ideas to say thank you:

  • Have your athletes showcase their creativity by filling out these Thank You Coach Month pages.
  • Let USA Swimming know how your women leaders impact the sport. Submit a news tip to USA Swimming for a chance to feature your coaches on the website and social media.
  • Keep it simple – thank your women leaders in person!

Support Women Owned Businesses
Endorsing women owned businesses is another great way to show support during Women’s History Month. USA Swimming directly supports women owned clubs through the Community Impact Grant Program.

Community Impact Grants aim to further diversify the sport of swimming through funding and mentorship. Women-owned and operated clubs who currently receive funds through the Community Impact Grant program include:
