Phelps, Franklin, Zorn and Bowman Included in 2023 International Swimming Hall of Fame Class

The International Swimming Hall of Fame (ISHOF) announced Monday that swimming greats Michael Phelps, Missy (Franklin) Johnson, Trischa Zorn-Hudson and coach Bob Bowman are among the 13 athletes, coaches and contributors included in this year’s honoree class. This year’s induction ceremony will take place September 30 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Phelps' 28 medals make him the most decorated Olympian of all time. He is still the only American male swimmer to compete in five Olympic Games and sits at the top of countless Olympic leaderboard, including the most gold medals (23) and most gold medals won at a single Olympic Games (eight in 2008) among others. Phelps was named FINA’s Male Swimmer of the Year in 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2012, and 2016.
During her Olympic debut in 2012, 17-year-old Franklin swept the backstroke events on her way to a five-medal haul to become the most successful female swimmer at the Olympic Games in London. She became the first woman to earn 11 career World Championships titles. In 2011 and 2012 she was named FINA’s Female Swimmer of the Year. She currently serves as a USA Swimming Foundation ambassador.
Zorn-Hudson is the first Paralympic athlete inducted to ISHOF. She earns her induction after a competitive career that features an astonishing 55 Paralympic medals, including 41 gold, across seven appearances at the Paralympic Games. The colossal medal count makes her the most decorated Paralympian of all time. Phelps and Zorn-Hudson were also inducted to the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Hall of Fame in 2022.
Bowman currently serves as the men’s and women’s head coach at Arizona State. Perhaps most known for coaching Phelps, Bowman also served as the men’s head coach for Team USA at the 2016 Olympic Games and has served on the U.S. staff for five previous Olympic Games (2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020). Bowman also served as the men’s head coach for the U.S. at the 2007, 2009 and 2013 FINA World Championships. Bowman will once again take the helm for the men’s team at the 2023 World Aquatics (formerly FINA) Championships later this summer in Fukuoka, Japan.
