FUKUOKA, Japan – The 2023 World Aquatics Championships pool competition started Sunday at the Marine Messe Arena. Team USA athletes captured three silver medals and one bronze – two in individual events and one in each of the women’s and men’s 4x100m relays.

Chris Guiliano, David Johnston, Matt King, Destin Lasco, Josh Matheny, Maxine Parker, Dare Rose and Gretchen Walsh made their World Championships (LCM) debut on Sunday.

Women’s 400m Freestyle – FINAL
SILVER – Katie Ledecky (Bethesda, Md./Gator Swim Club), 3:58.73*
Eighth – Bella Sims (Henderson, Nev./Sandpipers of Nevada), 4:05.37
*23rd career World Championships medal

Ledecky on her performance: “I can’t really complain. I thought Ariarne (Titmus) and Summer (McIntosh) would be fast and so I just wanted to stay in contact. I felt like I did that. I took off. I lost contact. It wasn’t bad; my stroke feels good, and I feel good in the water. I think all year my 800 felt better than my 400, so it’s just maintaining how I am feeling this meet.”

Men’s 400m Individual Medley – FINAL
SILVER – Carson Foster (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mason Manta Rays), 4:06.56
Fourth – Chase Kalisz (Baltimore, Md./Sun Devil Swimming), 4:10.23

Foster on his performance: “It’s always good to get on the podium. It’s always the goal. I’ve been practicing going in with no expectations and letting my body do the work. I’m happy with silver.”
