Madden Wins 800m Freestyle on Opening Night of TYR Pro Championships

The 2023 TYR Pro Championships opened with the 800m freestyle and 4x200m freestyle relays Wednesday night in Irvine, California.
2020 Olympic silver medalist Paige Madden kicked things off by topping the podium in the women’s 800m freestyle with her time of 8:32.46. Rachel Stege (Naperville, Ill./Athens Bulldog Swim Club) finished second in 8:34.75 and Caroline Pennington (Cary, N.C./TAC Titans) finished third in 8:41.10.
On the men’s side, Matthew Galea of Australia was the winner with a time of 7:50.25. Daniel Matheson (Peoria, Ariz./Sun Devil Swimming) finished second in 7:52.34 and National Team member Will Gallant (Collinsville, Conn./Wolfpack Elite) finished third in 7:54.75.
Women’s and men’s 4x200m freestyle relays were also contested with the women’s team from Wisconsin Aquatics winning in 8:01.99. The team from Australia took the win on the men’s side in 7:12.75.
The TYR Pro Championships continue through Saturday at the William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center. All sessions will be streamed on www.usaswimming.org/watch. Prelims take place daily beginning at 9 a.m. PT while finals will be at 5 p.m. PT each day.
The TYR Pro Championships are the culmination of the annual TYR Pro Swim Series.
