Based on feedback from coaches and led by the efforts of the Coach Advisory Council, USA Swimming is adding a Provisional Coach Membership option in the Online Member Registration (OMR), beginning September 1, 2023. The goal of this new membership category is to remove barriers to encouraging new coaches to enter our sport.
“This new membership category will be so helpful for new coaches to ease into the profession, help clubs retain coaches and lessen the expense.” – Marci Callan, Fairport Area Swim Team (FAST) and member of the Coach Advisory Council
Highlights of the Provisional Coach Membership:
- Members can join in this category for a total of three registration years.
- Requires only online training and requirements.
- More cost efficient for clubs that choose to cover this cost.
Online Requirements:
- Safety Training for Coaches Online
- Athlete Protection Training
- Background Check
- Concussion Training
- Quality Coaching Framework/Welcome to USA Swimming
- CANRA (for California residents only)
Recommended (not required):
- USADA CAT
- In-Water Safety Training for Swim Coaches
- Core Certification
The Provisional Coach Membership is not offered to coaches who have already completed the entire catalogue of training to become a coach, unless they stopped coaching, left the sport and then decided to return after multiple years away from the sport.
