Team USA Finishes Pool Competition at Pan American Games with 46 Medals

SANTIAGO, Chile – The pool swimming competition of the 2023 Pan American Games concluded today at the Centro Acuático del Estadio Nacional in Santiago, Chile, where Team USA won 46 medals (19g, 17s, 10b) over five days of competition, including six medals (2g, 3s, 1b) today. Team USA also set five Pan American Games records en route to their wins, including Rachel Stege (Naperville, Ill./Athens Bulldog Swim Club), who set a Pan American Games record in the women’s 1500m freestyle with her winning time of 16:13.59 – a time nearly 16 seconds faster than her previous personal best. 

More than 350 athletes from 41 federations competed in the pool – the most athletes competing in a sport at the Pan American Games.  

Women’s 1500m Freestyle 
1 – Rachel Stege (Naperville, Ill./Athens Bulldog Swim Club), 16:13.59 

6 – Erica Sullivan (Las Vegas, Nev./Longhorn Aquatics), 16:41.21 
 
Stege on her performance: “That was definitely a really fun race. I obviously love how it turned out so I’m really happy. I think I did really well. I definitely got a personal best by a lot – wasn’t expecting that – so I’m just very proud of myself and love repping the United States.”  

 Race Notes: 

 
  • Stege set a Pan American Games record with her winning time.  

  • This win marks Stege’s first individual, international gold medal and her third medal overall at these Pan American Games. 

  • Stege’s winning time is a new personal best; 15.96 seconds faster than her previous time.  
      

 

Women’s 200m Individual Medley 
3– Kennedy Noble (Avondale, Ariz./Wolfpack Elite), 2:14.19 

6 – Abby Harter (Broadlands, Va./Cavalier Aquatics/Piedmont Family YMCA), 2:17.95 
 
Noble on her performance: “I’m pretty pleased with it. I wanted to bring one last medal for Team USA…Coming into this meet, I didn’t think I’d get a medal in this race and I’m really happy that I was able to and I’m really grateful.” 

Race Notes: 

 
  • This medal is Noble’s fourth of these Pan American Games. 

Men’s 200m Individual Medley 
2 – Arsenio Bustos (Orange, Conn./Wolfpack Elite), 1:59.89 

7 – Mason Laur (Naples, Fla./University of Florida), 2:02.22 
 
Bustos on his performance: “It’s cool to get on the medal stand. I wanted to be a bit faster – was about a second off my best time but I’m happy with it for right now.” 

Race Notes: 

 
  • This medal is Bustos’ third of these Pan American Games. 

Men’s 1500m Freestyle 
2 – Will Gallant (Canton, Conn./Wolfpack Elite), 15:12.94 

 
Gallant on his performance: “I’m tired, but I gave it everything I had. I’m happy with that. Can’t really look at times right now, it’s only October. I’m training hard and I think that’s a good start for the year…It’s really cool. This is my first international team, so it feels good to represent my country and I’ve never been to a meet this big.” 

 Race Notes: 

 
  • This medal is Gallant’s second of these Pan American Games. 

Women’s 4x100m Medley Relay 
2 – USA, 3:59.39 

Josephine Fuller (Richmond, Va./Tennessee Aquatics), 1:00.47 
Emma Weber (Boulder, Colo./Cavalier Aquatics/Piedmont Family YMCA), 1:07.39 
Kelly Pash (Carmel, Ind./Carmel Swim Club/University of Texas), 57.62 
Catie DeLoof (Grosse Pointe, Mich./New York Athletic Club), 53.91 

Pash on the team’s performance: “I thought USA threw out a great race. Those girls really gave it all we had this session. We really gave all our energy and all we had into this last session. We just poured all of our heart and our energy into that. Obviously, we didn’t get gold, but it was a heck of a race and I’m just proud to be part of this team.”

  • Reilly Tiltmann, Anna Keating, Olivia Bray, and Gabi Albiero will also receive medals for their prelim swims. 
      

 

Men’s 4x100m Medley Relay 
1 – USA, 3:33.29 

Jack Aikins (Atlanta, Ga./SwimAtlanta/University of Virginia), 54.00 
Jake Foster (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mason Manta Rays/University of Texas), 1:00.61 
Luke Miller (Broomfield, Colo./Wolfpack Elite), 51.36 
Jonny Kulow (Lander, Wy./Sun Devil Swimming), 47.32 

Aikins on the team’s performance: “I feel really good about it. It was the last event of the meet and was good to end on a good note. Every medal that Team USA earns is great and it’s such an honor to represent. I was really excited to be a part of it.” 

 Race Notes: 

  • Christopher O’Connor, Noah Nichols, Jack Dahlgren, and Coby Carrozza will also receive medals for their prelim swims.
