2023 Speedo Winter Junior Championships Recap


Thomas Heilman - 2023 Speedo Winter Juniors


The two-site 2023 Speedo Winter Junior Championships at the McCorkle Aquatics Pavilion (East) and the FMC Natatorium (West) offered a glimpse of the country's emerging young talent. Hundreds of the nation's top athletes showcased their speed as National Age Group (NAG) and meet records fell in both locations. Standout performances included: 

Charlotte Crush | Girls 100y Backstroke | 15-16 NAG Record 

Charlotte Crush (Lakeside Swim Team) took down the 15-16 girl's 100y backstroke record after leading off the 200y medley relay, clocking a 49.53 and breaking the 50 second barrier at 15 years old.

Thomas Heilman | Boys' 50y Freestyle, 200y Freestyle, 200y Butterfly, 200y Individual Medley | 15-16 NAG Record 

Thomas Heilman (Cavalier Aquatics) took down two NAG records and tied another at the East meet. The 200y butterfly and 200y IM times both broke the records he set in 2022. He claimed titles in the 200y butterfly and the 200 IM record with a 1:40.86 and 1:43.46, respectively. Heilman's 200y butterfly time was also a meet record. With his 50y freestyle time of 19.42, he tied Michael Andrew's NAG record time set in 2015. Heilman also had five individual gold medal finishes.  

Alex Shackell | Girls' 200y Butterfly | 17-18 NAG Record 

Alex Shackell (Carmel Swim Club) posted a 1:50.15 during finals to break the NAG record held by fellow National Team member Claire Curzan. She eclipsed the previous record by seven-tenths of a second to claim gold and become the fifth-fastest performer of all time. Shackell also claimed three individual golds during the competition. 

Maximus Williamson | Boys' 200y Freestyle, 200y Individual Medley | 17-18 NAG Record 

Maximus Williamson (Lakeside Aquatic Club) broke two individual NAG records at the Speedo Junior Championships (West). His 1:41.18 in the 200 IM crushed a 12-year-old record set by David Nolan in 2011. In the 200y freestyle, he finished with a 1:31.37 to break his own record. Williamson claimed gold in three individual events in the West. 

Nashville Aquatic Club | Boys' 200y Medley Relay | 15-18 NAG Record 

Blake Amlicke, Gray Attmore, Spencer Nicholas, and Mack Schumann combined for a 1:26.16, breaking the Spartan Aquatic Club's previous record set in 2020.  

Cavalier Aquatics | Boys’ 400y Medley Relay | 15-18 NAG Record 

Cavalier Aquatic's David King, Max Moore, Thomas Heilman, and Will Browne combined for 3:08.95, a new 15-18 NAG record and meet record. 

Carmel Swim Club | Girls' 800y Freestyle Relay | 15-18 NAG Record 

Alex Shackell, Lynsey Bowen, Molly Sweeney, and Kayla Han produced a time of 6:59.52, breaking the 15-16 (2020) and 17-18 (2022) NCAP record by over eight seconds. 

Lakeside Aquatic Club | Boys' 800y Freestyle Relay | 15-18 NAG Record 

Maximus Williamson, Cooper Lucas, Max Hatcher, and River Paulk claimed the 15-18 NAG record and beat their previous record by two seconds with a time of 6:20.34.
