Katie Grimes Posts Top-5 Finish in World Aquatics Championships 5K

The World Aquatics Championships continued this morning in Doha, Qatar, with the Men’s and Women’s 5K. The U.S’ top finishers were Katie Grimes (Las Vegas, Nev./Sandpipers of Nevada) and Joshua Brown (Winter Park, Fla./Sandpipers of Nevada), who finished in fourth and 24th, respectively.

Women’s 5K – FINAL
4 – Katie Grimes (Las Vegas, Nev./Sandpipers of Nevada), 57:38.40
12 – Mariah Denigan (Walton, Ky./Indiana Swim Club), 57:55.30

Race Notes:

  • Grimes finished 4.5 seconds behind gold medalist Sharon Van Rouwendaal (NED), while Denigan finished 21.4 seconds back.
  • Grimes becomes just the fourth American to post a top-5 finish in the event at World Championships since 2011, joining Haley Anderson, Ashley Twichell, and Hannah Moore. 

Men’s 5K – FINAL
24 – Joshua Brown (Winter Park, Fla./Sandpipers of Nevada), 53:23.90
30 – Ivan Puskovitch (West Chester, Pa./TSM Aquatics), 53:51.00

Race Notes:
  • Brown made his World Aquatics Championships debut.
  • Brown was involved in a photo finish, with 0.6 seconds separating 22nd from 26th place. Puskovitch’s placement also came down to a photo finish, with less than a second separating 28th from 30th.
  • Brown finished 1:54.60 back from gold medalist Logan Fontaine (FRA), while Puskovitch finished 2:21.70 back.

The open-water programming at the 2024 World Aquatics Championships concludes tomorrow with the 4x1500-meter freestyle relay, which begins at 2:30 a.m. ET. Fans in the United States can stream the race live on Peacock.
