Claire Curzan Picks Up Fourth Medal of 2024 World Aquatics Championships

Women’s 50m Backstroke – FINAL
GOLD – Claire Curzan (Cary, N.C./University of Virginia), 27.43
Curzan on her race and overall performance so far: “It was super fun – the 50 back is a really quick event, so I had a blast with it. I'm just happy with how my preparation for this meet shaped up and I'm just excited for the rest of the competition.”
On hearing the National Anthem during the medal ceremony: “It keeps getting better every time, and I don't know if I can ever recreate that feeling, but I love it and hopefully it'll happen again.”
Race Notes:
• Curzan wins her fourth medal of these World Championships, which ties her (with Australia’s Brianna Throssell) for the most medals of the meet so far.
• First world title in the event for the U.S. since Olivia Smoliga in 2019.
• Curzan earned a new personal best in her prelim, semifinal and final swims.

5 – Shaine Casas (McAllen, Texas/Longhorn Aquatics), 1:57.73
Foster on his race: “It’s always an honor to be on the podium. I wish I was a little bit quicker, but overall I can’t complain about a silver medal.”

The fifth night of pool events at the 2024 World Aquatics Championships, held in Doha, Qatar, saw podium finishes from Claire Curzan (Cary, N.C./University of Virginia) and Carson Foster (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mason Manta Rays). The U.S. contingent leads the way in both the gold medal count (6) and total medals (12) earned during the competition’s swimming program.
