COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – USA Swimming, the national governing body for the sport of swimming in the United States, in partnership with the Indiana Sports Corp, today announced that Indianapolis, Indiana will once again host the U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Swimming in June 2028.
Held every four years, the Olympic Trials rank as the most prestigious swimming event in the U.S. The 2028 Trials will serve as the sole selection meet for the 2028 U.S. Olympic Swimming Team, which will represent Team USA on home soil at the LA28 Olympic Games. Building on the record-breaking success of the 2024 Trials, the event will once again push the boundaries of innovation and scale as it returns to a football stadium. Lucas Oil Stadium is tapped to host the Olympic-qualifying meet in front of hundreds of thousands of families, friends and fans over nine days of competition.
“The Olympic Trials are unlike any other event in our sport – they represent the pinnacle of competition, emotion, and national pride,” said USA Swimming Interim CEO Bob Vincent. “Indianapolis and Lucas Oil Stadium provide the perfect venue to prepare our athletes and coaches for the scale of the LA28 Games at SoFi stadium. We are proud to partner again with the Indiana Sports Corp and the city of Indianapolis. Securing our host location now allows us to build training plans with confidence and best prepares our athletes to dominate the next three years.”
“We are thrilled to welcome the U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Swimming back to Indianapolis and Lucas Oil Stadium in 2028,” said Indiana Sports Corp President Patrick Talty. “The 2024 Trials epitomized our mission of impacting the community through sports and showcased, once again, why Indy is the best host city in the country. We’re grateful to USA Swimming and USOPC for the continued partnership and the opportunity to host this event. We look forward to all lanes returning to Indy in 2028.”
Three temporary pools – one 50-meter competition pool and two warm-up pools – will be installed over the field in Lucas Oil Stadium. The state-of-the-art, multi-purpose sports and entertainment venue has hosted such prestigious events as the National Football League (NFL) Super Bowl, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Men's Basketball Championship games, the College Football Playoff National Championship, and many others. The Indiana Convention Center, connected to the stadium, will feature USA Swimming’s Toyota Aqua Zone, a can’t-miss fan activation area. USA Swimming House, a vibrant hospitality hub, is also expected to make its anticipated return. USA Swimming and the Indiana Sports Corp will create a city-wide festival throughout the event to celebrate the sport of swimming.
As part of the partnership, USA Swimming and the Indiana Sports Corp are proud to recommit to the ongoing Legacy Projects created in 2024 which have already made significant strides in expanding access to swimming and water safety for children in underserved communities throughout the Indianapolis region. Legacy Projects will continue supporting local programs and facilities with the resources and guidance needed to promote the sport of swimming and the life-saving skills of water safety ensuring a lasting impact well beyond the Trials themselves.
The 2024 Olympic Trials broke attendance records with over 285,000 fans across all sessions, a 60 percent increase over previous Trials. Live primetime coverage from the nine nights of Trials on NBC was up 20% over 2021, and the event generated more than $132 million in economic impact for the city of Indianapolis. The 2024 edition earned major international recognition, winning the Fan Engagement Award – Governing Body at the International Sports Awards, presented by the International Sports Convention, and being named a finalist for Sports Business Journal’s Event of the Year at the 2025 Sports Business Awards.
