USA Swimming Elects Brent Lang as Board Chair to Serve Through 2029
by USA Swimming
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – USA Swimming today announced the election of Brent Lang as Chair of the organization’s Board of Directors, effective immediately. The Board unanimously voted to approve Lang’s appointment during its most recent meeting, with the newly elected Chair to serve a four-year term through September 2029.
The election follows Natalie Coughlin’s announcement that she will step down as Board Chair after nearly a decade of service to USA Swimming governance.
“Brent is an incredible leader who brings a unique mix of business insight, athlete perspective, and governance to this role,” said Kevin Ring, USA Swimming Chief Executive Officer. “As an Olympian and seasoned executive, he knows what it takes to drive success in and out of the pool. His leadership and thoughtful approach will help guide USA Swimming through its next phase of growth.”
Lang brings a wealth of executive and governance experience to the position, with a proven record of leading organizations through transformation and growth. Lang is an Olympic gold medalist, business leader, and committed mentor with a distinguished career in both sports and technology.
As a member of the 1988 U.S. Olympic Team, he won a gold medal in the 4x100 freestyle relay at the Seoul Games and was a four-time NCAA champion at the University of Michigan. After earning his MBA from Stanford, Lang led Vocera Communications through a successful IPO and eventual acquisition by Stryker in 2022. Currently, he serves on the board of Outset Medical and chairs the board of Eko Health, innovating medical technology with AI-powered devices.
From 2018 to 2024, he served on the USA Gymnastics Board of Directors, including as Treasurer, helping lead the organization through a complete governance overhaul, rebranding, and cultural reset centered on athlete well-being and transparency. During that time, he helped guide the development of the federation’s strategic plan and assisted with the Training and Wellness Center project promoting athlete health and safety.
His passion for supporting athletes extends to his involvement with the Positive Coaching Alliance and past service on the Thriveworks board, initiatives focused on athlete and mental well-being. Lang has received the CEO World Award and the NCAA Silver Anniversary Award. He resides in Los Altos, California, with his wife and continues to swim with the local Masters team, giving back to the sport that shaped his life.
In this role, Lang will oversee Board governance, collaborate closely with USA Swimming leadership and athlete representatives, and guide organizational priorities through the next quadrennium.
“I’m honored to serve as Board Chair and to help guide USA Swimming through this next phase of growth and opportunity,” said Brent Lang. “Our organization is at an exciting inflection point with the LA28 Games on the horizon and a deep well of talent across our athletes, coaches, and staff. My goal is to ensure that the Board operates with unity, focus, and transparency while keeping athlete development and long-term vision at the heart of every decision. Together, we can continue to strengthen the foundation of our sport and position USA Swimming for sustained success well into the future.”
In addition, USA Swimming’s Athlete Advisory Council (AAC) appointed Maya Dirado to fulfill the remainder of Coughlin’s term as an athlete representative on the Board of Directors, effective immediately.
The AAC also elected Lilly King to serve as Chair of the AAC, with Nic Fink re-elected as Vice Chair. Both will serve one-year terms. King succeeds Caitlin Leverenz-Smith, who has served as the inaugural Chair of the AAC since its inception, and will continue her service as a member of both the AAC and the USA Swimming Board of Directors through 2028.
