SACRAMENTO, Calif. – World Aquatics Junior Swimming Champion Justina Kozan (Brea, Calif./Unattached) got the session started with a narrow victory in the women’s 200-meter freestyle, finishing with a time of 1:59.31. In the first men’s event of the evening, Brooks Curry (Atlanta, Ga./California Aquatics) made a statement in the 200m freestyle, winning by more than a second over two Australians to take the victory in the men’s 200m freestyle. Curry’s 1:46.74 was good for the fastest time in the world this year.

In the women’s 50m backstroke, U.S. Open record holder Katherine Berkoff (Missoula, Mont./Wolfpack Elite) grabbed the victory by less than a tenth of a second over Wolfpack Elite teammate Rhyan White (Herriman, Utah/Wolfpack Elite).

Swimming in front of a hometown crowd, Luca Urlando’s (Sacramento, Calif./Dart Swimming) 51.32 in the men’s 100m butterfly was good for the third-best time in the world this year.

In the final event of the evening, Michael Hochwalt (Colbert, Wash./Unattached) outpaced the rest of the field by nearly eight seconds in the men’s 400m individual medley. Hochwalt’s final time of 4:16.88 was a new personal best by almost three seconds.

3 – Alexa McDevitt (Mercer Island, Wash./Unattached), 2:00.13

Kozan after swimming the 400m individual medley later in the evening: “I’m pretty tired after the double. I wanted the afternoon to be a little smoother than the morning. I was going out fast but ended up choppy. So, in that race I wanted to go out with a longer stroke and was able to finish well.”

Men’s 200m Freestyle – FINAL

1 – Brooks Curry (Atlanta, Ga./California Aquatics), 1:46.74

2 – Maximillian Giuliani (AUS), 1:46.89

3 – Samuel Short (AUS), 1:47.18

Curry regarding his race strategy: “The goal tonight was to see a 1:46, so I’m really happy I got down. I’m glad it was well under 6.”

Curry after discovering his time is fastest in the world this year: “That’s what I’m working for every day, to be the fastest in the world so nobody can tell me otherwise.”

Curry on his recent training regimen: “Training has been great. We’ve had a small group back in Berkeley for a little while with everyone at the NCAA’s, so I have been able to focus pretty well the last couple of months. I was really trying to focus and dial in, and that’s paying off right now.”

Shackley on swimming two events this evening:I’ve become very spoiled, that honestly wasn’t that bad. I have been doing 200 fly and 200 back with 30 minutes in between at meets, so that turnaround time was nothing. I was at two-hundred pace this morning, so I knew that in order to win it, I needed to take it out fast and hold on.”

Hochwalt on preparing for the race: “I’ve never gone into a TYR Pro Swim final seeded first before. I feel like there is more pressure when you are going in first, but I knew if I hit the butterfly hard, my training would step in.”

Tomorrow’s action includes the women’s and men’s 200m butterfly, 50m freestyle, 100m backstroke, 200m breaststroke, 50m butterfly, and 400m freestyle. Meet information and the complete competition schedule can be found here.
