Athletes continued to shine on night three of the TYR Pro Swim Series Fort Lauderdale. The women’s 50-meter butterfly proved to be an exciting race as Olympians Gretchen Walsh (Nashville, Tenn./New York Athletic Club), Kate Douglass (Pelham, N.Y./New York Athletic Club), and Regan Smith (Lakeville, Minn./Longhorn Aquatics) claimed the top three places. Walsh became the new American record holder in the event and the second woman in history to break the 25-second barrier, going 24.93 to claim first place. Approximately 20 minutes after the race finished, Smith swam the women’s 200m backstroke, touching out her competition by going 2:06.32.

In the women’s 200m freestyle, Claire Weinstein (White Plains, N.Y./Sandpipers of Nevada) placed first with a time of 1:54.93. It was her first time earning an individual time under 1:55 in the event, narrowly beating distance swimming legend Katie Ledecky (Bethesda, Md./Gator Swim Club) who went 1:55.51. Paris Olympic teammate Erin Gemmell (Potomac, Md./Longhorn Aquatics) placed third in the event with a time of 1:57.10.

Carson Foster (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mason Manta Rays) started his night by winning the men’s 200m freestyle (1:46.46). He followed his win by breaking the two-minute mark and placing third in the men’s 200m backstroke (1:59.09) less than an hour later.

The women’s and men’s 400m individual medley closed out the night as Emma Weyant (Sarasota, Fla./University of Florida) and distance swimmer Bobby Finke (Clearwater, Fla./Saint Petersburg Aquatics) got their hands on the wall first. Finke led the race almost entirely, holding off the Paris champion and current world record holder Leon Marchand (FRA).

Earlier in the evening, Skyler Smith (San Jose, Calif./North Carolina Aquatic Club) went 30.49 in the women’s 50m breaststroke to touch out breaststroke Olympians Emma Weber (Denver, Colo./Unattached) and Lilly King (Evansville, Ind./Indiana Swim Club), who went 30.57 and 30.63, respectively.

Women’s 200m Freestyle – FINAL

1 – Claire Weinstein (White Plains, N.Y./Sandpipers of Nevada), 1:54.93

2 – Katie Ledecky (Bethesda, Md./Gator Swim Club), 1:55.51

3 – Erin Gemmell (Potomac, Md./Longhorn Aquatics), 1:57.10

Weinstein on her mindset headed into finals: “I’ve been doing pretty good at this meet, so I wanted to just keep it rolling. There are so many amazing swimmers here, so my only race plan was to race the people around me.”

Weinstein on the support of family at meets: “I love my sisters and it’s really special that they also swim. They look up to so many swimmers here, and it’s funny because many of them are my friends. It’s just amazing having so much support from my family.”

Men’s 200m Freestyle – FINAL

1 – Carson Foster (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mason Manta Rays), 1:46.46

2 – Tomas Koski (DEN), 1:46.59

3 – Luke Hobson (Reno, Nev./Longhorn Aquatics), 1:46.76

Foster on what it took to get through the last 50: “Just thinking about training, I feel like I could hear Bob (Bowman) on the last 50. I was trying to imagine just getting into those races at practice. We have a great group down in Austin, so that really helped me.”

Foster on his goals for this TYR Pro Swim Series meet: “I’m hoping to get a lot of training out of this meet. It’s been quite a while since I’ve done doubles in a meet, so that’s going to be big for my confidence going into summer. I’m trying to handle these doubles so that later in the summer it becomes a little easier.”

Women’s 50m Breaststroke – FINAL

1 – Skyler Smith (San Jose, Calif./North Carolina Aquatic Club), 30.49

2 – Emma Weber (Denver, Colo./Unattached), 30.57

3 – Lilly King (Evansville, Ind./Indiana Swim Club), 30.63

Smith on racing against her role models: “Lilly (King) has probably been one of my biggest role models since 2016. I remember that after 2023 World Champ Trials, I sent her a direct message and told her it was the coolest thing to swim against you. So, to be able to race against her is awesome. She’s still one of my biggest role models and I’m honored to compete against her.”

Smith on her first TYR Pro Swim Series win: “It’s so crazy, I haven’t made a U.S. National Team. I haven’t done anything like that, so to say I’ve won a Pro Swim after college and get my first win ever, is just an awesome thing!”

Men’s 50m Breaststroke – FINAL

1 – Denis Petrashov (KGZ), 26.94

2– Michael Andrew (Encinitas, Calif./Sun Devil Swimming), 27.01

3 – Aleksas Savickas (LTU), 27.34

Women’s 50m Butterfly – FINAL

1 – Gretchen Walsh (Nashville, Tenn./New York Athletic Club), 24.93*

2 – Kate Douglass (Pelham, N.Y./New York Athletic Club), 25.39

3 – Regan Smith (Lakeville, Minn./Longhorn Aquatics), 25.63

*American record

Walsh on her new American record: “I think that the second woman to ever be under 25 (seconds) is a pretty cool stat. I have definitely had my eyes set on that, and I’m really happy with the swim. There is definitely room to get better. It was a great way to show out at night three of the Pro Swim Series.”

Walsh on breaking barriers in the sport: “I think that going into the season I have been really close to a lot of different barriers. There’s the 55 mark in the 100 fly, the 53 mark in the 100 free, and the 25 mark in the 50 fly. It’s been cool to surpass two of those here, and I am really happy about that. I love following in the footsteps of Sarah Sjöström (in the women’s 50m butterfly) – she's such an idol to me, and it’s cool to be in the same sentence as her. She’s an incredible person to race and follow in her footsteps.”

Men’s 50m Butterfly – FINAL

1 – Ilya Kharun (CAN), 23.09

2 – Dylan Carter (TTO), 23.24

3 – Shaine Casas (McAllen, Texas/Longhorn Aquatics), 23.25

Women’s 200m Backstroke – FINAL

2 – Summer McIntosh (CAN), 2:06.82

3 – Claire Curzan (Cary, N.C./Tac Titans), 2:08.20

Smith on her busy meet: “I think it's been a good racing opportunity so far and a good benchmark to see where I am. I am in a completely different spot, training-wise, compared to where I was at in Westmont. This has been a pretty good meet overall.”

Men’s 200m Backstroke – FINAL

1 – Hurbert Kos (HUN), 1:56.45

2 – Gavin Keogh (Erie, Colo./Flatiron Athletic Club), 1:58.47

3 – Carson Foster (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mason Manta Rays), 1:59.09

Women’s 400m Individual Medley – FINAL

1 – Emma Weyant (Sarasota, Fla./University of Florida), 4:33.95

2 – Ellen Walshe (CAN), 4:35.32

3 –Leah Hayes (Sugar Grove, Ill./Cavalier Aquatics), 4:38.78

Weyant on her race: “I’m honestly a little surprised right now because that’s the fastest I have been in three years since I went 4:33 in prelims (at the) Tokyo (Olympics). I’m happy! It’s been a journey, and for the past few years, I have been focusing on my breaststroke. I am finally confident that I can swim my stroke. I was a little nervous since my (disqualification) in 2022. It’s finally coming together, and my freestyle was much better than it was a few weeks ago.”

Men’s 400m Individual Medley – FINAL

1 – Bobby Finke (Clearwater, Fla./Saint Petersburg Aquatics), 4:13.67

2 – Leon Marchand (FRA), 4:13.86

3 – Tommy Bried (Powder Springs, Ga./University of Louisville), 4:17.29

Finke on his trademark closing speed: “I was very grateful that Leon (Marchand) had the 200 (freestyle) earlier tonight. I was just doing my best to hang on and play on my strengths a bit.”
